"Dressage is in the truest sense, the art of classical riding. Dressage puts the horse and rider in a one-ness. This painting gives a rough idea of the sport known as dressage. It shows the horse doing an element called "the quarter pass" or "side stepping". Dressage is a series of many different elements combined to make up dressage tests. Which looks very much like our classical dancing, known as "Ballet". It takes patience, control, and an ability to share a common ground. It is to bring the horse and rider, . .In Harmony.

| "Tom was recently asked to furnish a painting that could be used for the program cover, as well as posters for the upcoming Portola Valley Classic. The Portola Valley Classic is a AAA Hunter/Jumper show. The original painting of the image you see here is to be auctioned off at the show. The proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The show will be held at the Portola Training Center in Portola Valley, CA. which runs from June 20th through the 24th. Tom will be there himself, and will have quite a few of his paintings there on display. This painting is 28" x 22" and was done in oil." | Hot Summer Classic |
A Timely Event | "This painting is another using this particular style that Tom's taken a liking to, and seems to have developed a talent for. Tom has blurred the background, and kept the details to a minimum, so as to emphasize the horse and rider. This is from a three day event, where riders are tested in dressage, cross country (as this painting depicts), and stadium jumping. Difficult tasks for both horse, and rider." |
| "This is a painting Tom was commissioned to do for this owner Heather, and her horse Patrick. Heather provided me with a photo, which is what Tom worked from. The photo had a lot of things, debris, and other unsightly objects in the background, that really took away from the picture. So Tom cleaned it up, and put his own background in it, so as to put most of the emphasis on the horse, and rider. The darkness of the trees add lot of contrast to the horses' movement with the bright sunny skies behind. Heather absolutely loved the outcome of the painting." | A Medal Class |
The Jump Off

"Tom went to the Menlo Circus Club in Palo Alto, Ca. last year to take some reference photos. While there he noticed a teen age girl riding a thoroughred jumper. He looked wild. A real handful. Tom went over after her jump, and asked if he'd ever raced. She told me he had. Tom asked his racing name. Turns out, Tom had ridden him many times, and told her, he had a mind of his own when racing also." |
| "When Tom first started displaying any of his art at hunter/jumper shows, he didn't have anything but racing paintings. Tom did this painting to show people that he could do hunter/ jumpers. Tom close cropped it and didn't put the rider's face in because he figured it would limit his potential buyers" | Up and Over |
Ride A Painted Pony | "While at Menlo Circus Club, Tom saw this cute little girl on her flashy paint pony, on the warm up field jumping him over some 1 foot jumps. She caught his eye, so he snapped a couple shots. This painting resulted from that impulse." |
| "It was late in the afternoon and the show was over, when Tom saw these two young girls. The one was sitting on her friend's lap and her horse was grazing next to them. Tom saw this as a great pose." | Best Friends |
