Tom has done a beautiful job with the lighting here as the sun sinks beyond the Northern ridge of the mountain. He is a tired cowboy looking forward to the steak and beans awaiting him."

A  Cut  Above

"When Tom first started loping horses trying to get the experience to become a jockey, he had a friend who owned an old lead pony that used to be a cutting horse. Tom got on her one day to herd some yearlings into the breaking barn, and she just about jumped out from under him, going after a colt that had strayed from the group. Tom was so fascinated that a horse would do that on their own. Tom often thought about that old mare. He knew he would eventually paint a cutting horse. When some of his paintings were accepted into the "Celebration of Western Art" at the Grand National Rodeo held at the Cow Palace in San Francisco last year, Tom went there, set up his easel to paint. This is a painting he did while he was there."

"Tom wanted the viewer to really focus in on the bull in this painting, and that is why he made the head so bright. This painting takes the viewer right where Tom wants them to go. From the head of the bull your eyes go up to the cowboy on the left, and then across to the bullrider. and then to the other cowboy on the right. Finally your eyes go back to the bull. It keeps the viewer looking at the painting which is what an artist is trying to accomplish.""
