Tom has been getting an unusual amount of visitors requesting he do more paintings of youngsters, and in more affordable sizes. Tending to the wishes of his visitors and clientele, Tom has done these works to oblige all who are interested in these more formative years. Tom has done many small, yet brilliantly detailed pieces dedicated to the art of painting young! This page should keep you all entertained as well as informed in some small ways about a filly or colt and some of their habits as they are growing up, . . long before they are considered as race horse material. "This mare with her newborn foal standing close by her, gives a feeling of warmth, and safety. The mare appears to be carefully guarding her young newborn, giving a sense of warning to any would be intruders. This is my baby, stay away! Mares can be fiercely protective, and very jealous also. You need to exercise caution approaching the mare when she's got a foal at her side. This painting in oil is on gallerywrap. Gallerwrap is a canvas that has wider sides that are painted, so the piece doesn't need to be framed. Nice for your family room."

"Tom did this painting with a very warm background to give the painting that warm summer feeling. This filly looks like she is just dozing off for her daily afternoon siesta."

"This painting is of a fairly young filly who is just cantering along. She was foaled in Kentucky and was maybe a month old at this time."

"You gotta just love this pose of the foal eating. It's like she is just casually eating a blade here, and a blade there. This painting, gives you the feel of a relaxed and lazy day spent grazing about. This is a tiny painting that can easily be hung just about anywhere in your home, or office."

A Mother's Love

"Most creatures, wild or domestic, are instinctive about parenting. The horse is no different. Horses are very good at the mothering tasks. When their offspring are this young, they are generally very attentive. This painting reminds Tom of a good Mom, as she checks on her foal."

"This is a rather different angle for a painting, as we view this foal from the rear end. Tom did this painting as such because it's just not the usual thing you'd see painted. Even at this tender young age you'll notice early on as the Thoroughbreds powerful hindquarters begin to take shape. The location of this scene, could be just about anywhere in the springtime of the year."

Oh Yeah, That's The Spot

"Just like people, . . . horses have itches too! If you've ever watched a foal trying to accomplish this tricky little chore, you likely can find the humor in it. Tom has done this painting with a dark background to create a strong contrast with the foal. This would look great in a child's room, den, rec-room, or any room at all."

"This painting is another tiny, but tasteful piece. It's only 5" x 7", which is why Tom painted it with this very simple background; to keep from overwhelming the mare and colt. Tom once read that a mare can produce up to 2 gallons of milk each day, so she can keep her foal nourished."

"This painting's title is pretty self explanatory. Tom thought the real situation was that the mare is kind of herding her colt, to keep him going in the direction she's choosing, rather than where he might otherwise want to go."

"Tom wanted to create a mood with this painting, so he's used what he likes to call the "Sunset" colors to depict the warmth of a late summer day sometime after noon. He's accomplished setting such a mood here."

"This just shows a very natural behavior that horses do while out in the field together. Who knows why the mare and filly are running? It could be a number of reasons. Tom likes to think they are running just because they love too. A typical jockey's answer."

"This colt seems as interested in the viewer as the viewer is in him. Horses are naturally very curious about people. Younger horses tend to be kind of proud, even cocky and enjoy showing off for their peers and even people. This colt looks very proud of himself and knows he's being noticed."

"This is another with a rear-end view. Love the way they just seem to be looking at something interesting. Tom gave this painting a background that screams of the "California hills" in all it's beauty. This appears to be an unspoiled moment, and one a person wouldn't want to intrude on."

"The location for this painting was in wine country, Sonoma County, California. It depicts a couple mares and a foal, just doing what it is that horses may be doing on a given sunny day, just basking in this glorious afternoon sunshine."

"This colt is just preparing to stand. It's brilliant the way the reds, and pinks in the coat of the foal contrast with the greens in the sky and grass."

"In this painting, it looks like the foal is standing guard while the mother gets a bite to eat. The contrasting oranges and reds of these horses' coats along with the greens of the trees, and the grass, make a bold statement. This is a common farm type scene. Wherever you might find mares and their foals out together in pastures. It shows off their peace and tranquil lifestyle."

"This was a commission job that Tom did for his friend, Ruthie. It belongs on the Commissions page, but seeing how young this filly appears to be, it just seemed fittin' to put her here as she's still at that tender age still in need of some day care."
