"Tom used to ride for Sheila Ullmann and her husband, Larry before he retired. They breed and race their own racehorses. The main stud that they owned was the young stallion, Bold Badgett, who died suddenly last year. They didn't own Disturbingthepeace but since he was Bold Badgett's highest money earner, they wanted a painting of him. I even put their colors on the jockey and blinkers. I've captured him winning the Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park."

"This is another painting Tom recently did for the Ullmann's. This is one which they bred and raced on the Southern California circuit, Bold Roberta. In this painting she is winning an allowance race during The Oak Tree Meet at Santa Anita in October. Tom has really captured the San Gabriel Mountains as they often appear at that time of the year."

49'er Fan at Santa Anita |
"Tom visited Santa Anita back in 1996 and saw this guy in the San Francisco 49'er hat leaning against the paddock rail. It struck him as funny because San Francisco and Los Angeles are always enemies sports-wise, and here he was wearing a hat like that in L.A."
|
"Even after the race, there is still a lot to do. Cooling out the horse after the bath, feeding, bandaging and bedding him down. This is a very relaxing piece because of the late afternoon light."

Transition, Jockey To Artist | "This painting is actually finished. If you look closely, you'll see the jockey is swinging a large paint brush and not a whip. My friend, Manuel Gomez, suggested that I do a painting like this to depict my career change from Jockey to Artist."
|
"Tom always wanted to do a painting with this view point. The painting is fairly large, which helps make it to appear as a more dramatic painting."

"This is a whimsical look at horse racing. In the painting, the horses are wearing the colors, boots and pants, while the jockeys are nude. Every once in a while I like to make a joke in my paintings. Imagine how hard it was posing nude in front of a mirror while I painted the jockeys."

| "Gotta love this view. The painting shows that the horse is anticipating the race to come. Yet the atmosphere offers the calm, quiet feeling that suits the Delaware area." | Riders Up, Delaware Park
